The Rusty Award

"Nothing is ever really lost to us as long as we remember it." - L.M. Montgomery, The Story Girl

Carol “Rusty” Stevens worked as an L.V.N. for 10 years, lovingly caring for strangers, before devoting herself full time to her husband, two beautiful daughters and eventually a granddaughter. She immersed herself in her children’s activities, volunteering her time and talents wherever they were needed. She later established and ran the library for the Viejas Tribal Education Department. She spent roughly 15 years working as a librarian, running the reading incentive program she started and tutoring students. On October 2, 2013, cancer robbed the world of a truly bright, shining star. Everyone Rusty came in contact with walked away fully loved and a better person. She was The Giving Tree, generously sacrificing all of herself to anyone in need. In her honor, we have established The Rusty Award, for those who shine in the underappreciated job of caregiving–be it someone in the medical field or a devoted family member.
